Rosa Barba

Born in Italy in 1972, Rosa Barba is a Berlin-based visual artist. She is best known for her idiosyncratic use of the medium of film, exploring its materiality and sculptural potentialities. Barba creates fascinating cinematic film installations that have recently been presented in such international venues as Saint Louis CAM (2012), Jeu de Paume in Paris (2012), Tate Modern in London (2010) and Venice Biennale (2009). Initially interested in photography she moved to experiment with moving image while studying at the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne. Barba’s work considers cinema both in terms of its physical characteristics of celluloid, light, projector and sound and in terms of its implicit apparatus including viewers, theatre and narratives.
