Brenda Rodriguez Alegre

Dr. Brenda Rodriguez Alegre is a Registered Psychologist, Psychometrician, and Licensed Teacher from the Philippines. She studied at the University of Santo Tomas (UST) where she completed her BS Psychology, MA Psychology and PhD in Psychology. She graduated with Magna Cum Laude honors in her PhD. Her MA thesis and PhD dissertation were about transgender women. Her M.A. Thesis on the Phenomenology of Trans* experience is perhaps among the very first academic research done by a transwoman about transwomen.

She is currently on the Board of Directors of STRAP (The Society of Transsexual Women Advocates of the Philippines) which is the first and longest existing support and advocacy group for and of transgender women. She has been a member for the last 12 years. She is also one of the Trans Secretariat of ILGA – the International LGBTQI Association. She is the lead coordinator for the English-speaking members of TGR – Transgender Resource Center in Hong Kong and a member of Association of World Citizens Hong Kong. She is a Resident Tutor at Lap Chee College, University of Hong Kong, and an Assistant Lecturer at the University of Hong Kong where she teaches sexuality and gender as perhaps one of the few if not the only trans*-identifying academics in Hong Kong. This course/ subject is among the most in demand with an average of 300 students a year. Around 2,000 students have benefited from this course’s offerings on LGBTQI lives and experiences. She has upcoming publications on transgender people’s experiences. She has been an activist and rights advocate for LGBTQ and women in both the Philippines and Hong Kong.

Dr. Alegre has spoken at De La Salle University, St. Paul College, St. Benilde, San Beda, Ateneo University, U.S.T. and University of the Philippines. In addition to her interests in psychology, LGBTQ advocacies and teaching, she is also interested in music is currently part of The Harmonics, the first LGBTQ choir in Hong Kong.
