Mutual Love Society II

Last days of Wu Tsang’s Duilian

In ten days, Duilian will close at Spring Workshop and begin its journey to Europe for the 9th Berlin Biennale.

On Sunday, May 22, 2016, in celebration of having had Wu Tsang, boychild and a host of beautiful spirits with us for months, we will present Mutual Love Society II as our finissage. Building on Wu‘s evening last fall where she brought together poetry and wine lovers in the first Mutual Love Society, we invited two Hong Kong feminist poets Cao Shuying and Sonia Wong to host new participants and reunite former participants for another evening of poetry dedicated to Qiu and Wu. Using their own poetry centered around ideas of female desire and subjectivity, Cao and Wong will present specially-chosen verses and then engage the audience in creating new (mis)translations to mark the end of Duilian.

In June, we are delighted to host Roger M. Buergel and Tirdad Zolghadr as invited speakers for Para Site‘s 2016 International Conference and Workshops for Emerging Professionals (June 21–23). We also look forward to welcoming Asia Art Archive‘s summer camp to Spring at the end of this month for our yearly collaboration with them.

Come back one more time to get lost in the reverie of Duilian, on May 22 or any other day before then.

Duilian is a film installation that is part of a decade-long research project by visual artist and filmmaker Wu Tsang. The multi-media exhibition centers on Duilian, a newly-commissioned experimental film that interprets the life and writings of the famous Chinese revolutionary Qiu Jin (秋瑾1875-1907) through visual and martial arts. The work is a culmination of Wu Tsang’s two three-month residencies at Spring Workshop last year.

Duilian is commissioned and produced by Spring Workshop, with co-commissioners Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève for BIM 2016, Arthub Asia, and 9th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art, with support from Nottingham Contemporary, the Fonds d’Art Contemporain de la Ville et du Canton de Genève and In Between Art Film. Finissage
Mutual Love Society II

Poetry and wine were central to the relationship of Chinese revolutionary, feminist and poet Qiu Jin and her intimate friend, the calligrapher Wu Zhiying.

For the finissage of Duilian, we invited two Hong Kong feminist poets Cao Shuying and Sonia Wong to host Mutual Love Society II, a special evening of poetry appreciation dedicated to the spirit of Qiu Jin and Wu Zhiying. Cao and Wong will share their own poems on themes of female desire and subjectivity, and guide participants in a new round of (mis)translation. Bring your pen and your wit.
