Duilian is open now!

This Thursday, March 24, we’ll hold a special event Tears, Tears, Tears with Wu Tsang as part of our new show and South Island Cultural District‘s Art Brunch. Join us at Spring for this Art Basel Hong Kong event where we incinerate Qiu Jn’s multiple legacies through Chinese practices of ancestral mourning.

Please also note our extended opening hours this week. We’ll be open daily from 10am to 7pm between March 21-26.

We look forward to seeing you. Happy Art Basel Week!

*Duilian refers to a form of couplet poetry (對聯) and also refers to the wushu category of sword-fighting (對練). Both forms evoke dueling aspects: in poetry, the words are rhymed in tonal opposition to each other, and in wushu, a pair of martial artists engage in a dance of swords.

Cultural District Art Brunch

Inspired by the history of Qiu Jin’s multiple burials as well as the struggles by different groups and individuals to claim the symbolic meaning and resting place of her body, we invite you to join us at this special event where Qiu’s multiple legacies will be incinerated through Chinese practices of ancestral mourning.

The event happens during Art Basel’s South Island Art Brunch from 10am to 2pm. You can start with a visit to Spring Workshop, then take our latest neighbourhood map in order to find other nearby galleries and eateries. For info on South Island Cultural District (SICD), click www.sicd.com.hk

Duilian is a film installation that is part of a decade-long research project by visual artist and filmmaker Wu Tsang. The multi-media exhibition centers on Duilian, a newly-commissioned experimental film that interprets the life and writings of the famous Chinese revolutionary Qiu Jin (秋瑾1875-1907) through visual and martial arts. The work is a culmination of Wu Tsang‘s two three-month residencies at Spring Workshop last year.

Duilian is commissioned and produced by Spring Workshop, with co-commissioners Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève for BIM 2016, Arthub Asia, and 9th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art, with support from Nottingham Contemporary, the Fonds d’Art Contemporain de la Ville et du Canton de Genève and In Between Art Film. Courtesy of the artist and Galerie Isabella Bortolozzi, Berlin.
