Hello from a post-tropical-cyclone Hong Kong!

We hope those of you who were blown around this week by Typhoon Nida are finding a way to marvel at how the winds have rearranged your lives. Our HK Farm planters weathered the typhoon easily, but the Industrial Forest installation on our rear terrace looks like someone took a giant egg-beater to its pencil-thin filaments. Somehow, though, its crazy new hairstyle is beguiling.

Our big news is that we will soon open Wong Wai Yins first solo show in 5 years, Without Trying. Developed during her two-month residency at Spring from June to August, the exhibition marks a change in the direction of her artistic practice as she considers the ways that motherhood has transformed her personal convictions and philosophy on making art. Please save the date of August 20 for the opening.

This month we welcome American artists-in-residence Calla Henkel and Max Pitegoff, a duo based in Berlin whose practice includes parsing, developing and running creative spaces. During their first research residency in Hong Kong, Henkel and Pitegoff are studying several arts organizations and community-based projects here as they prepare for their program at Spring Workshop this autumn.

We have also enjoyed having as summer residents curator Ozge ErsoyEva Franch of Storefront for Art and Architecture and writer Miguel Syjuco. Later this month, we look forward to hosting members of artist collective ruangrupa who will return to Hong Kong as part of Asia Art Archive‘s special programme series 15 Invitations for 15 Years as well as M+/Design Trust fellow Joseph Grima.

Tomorrow (Thursday August 4), we hope you’ll join us for a performative lecture Postscript on I’m that angel by current resident Tyler Coburn, an artist and writer based in New York. Coburn’s publication I’m that angel (2011—) explores the conditions of how we work on and against the computer, narrated from the perspective of a “content farmer”: an online journalist contracted to generate articles based on words peaking in Google Trends. In his talk, Coburn will share images and stories from his tour, discuss the industrialization of online writing, and describe the role of data centers in the ever-expanding physical Internet.

Come back and join us at Spring…for a program or for lunch or just for a hello.

Wong Wai Yin

We are delighted to announce the upcoming solo show of Hong Kong artist Wong Wai Yin. As Wong attempts to recalibrate her life following the birth of her son, she embarks on a learning adventure, engaging in courses on dog training, spiritual response therapy, guitar and French. The resulting work is an adventure in identity shifting.

Wong Wai Yin is an artist-in-residence at Spring Workshop from June through August 2016. The exhibition is curated by Christina Li, Director of Spring Workshop.

Postscript on I’m that angel
with Tyler Coburn

Tyler Coburn‘s publication I’m that angel (2011 -) explores the conditions of how we work on and against the computer, narrated from the perspective of a “content farmer”: an online journalist contracted to generate based on words peaking in Google Trends.

Periodically, Coburn holds readings at data centers worldwide, including Google New York, Google Zurich and the infamous “Wikileaks Bunker” of Bahnhof Stockholm. These events give audiences access to the sites where “the cloud” is kept.

In this talk, Coburn will share images and stories from his tour, discuss the industrialization of online writing, and describe the role of data centers in the ever-expanding physical Internet.
