Des hôtes: a foreigner, a human,
an unexpected visitor

This Saturday, our fall program at Spring curated by new director Christina Li officially begins.

As a prologue, last Saturday night artist Toshie Takeuchi filled us in on the uninvited inhabitants who are squatting at the former Congolese embassy in The Hague. Her talk Let’s talk with our mouths full set the stage for the rest of our fall program Des hôtes: a foreigner, a human, an unexpected visitor to unfold. The program takes its title from the French word hôte, which means both “host” and “guest.” It is a starting point for contemplating the entanglements and blurred territories inherent to the politics of hospitality.

A first cluster of existing and new artworks by Kasper Bosmans, Toshie Takeuchi and Yu Honglei situate the program’s enquiry within the domestic sphere. As part of his contribution to the exhibition, Bosmans will be running a guided tour on opening day called Rumored Ornamentation
that activates his series of small paintings, which themselves are annotations of his ongoing conversation with curator Christina Li. Our opening coincides with South Island Cultural District (SICD) Art Day, so come explore the Aberdeen and Wong Chuk Hang artspaces and eateries.

Other artists in the ongoing program include Milena BonillaRaimundas Malasauskas, Luisa Ungar, and Trevor YeungThe exhibition will gradually unfold over three months through a continuous event program of artist-devised tours, chocolate readings, post-hypnosis sessions and zoological lectures, where artworks function as prompts for—or evidence of—these gatherings.  (Click here nbsp;for more details on the fall program.)

Come join us, and find out whether you are the guest or the host. Or both.

The HK FARMers’ Almanac

HK Farm (Glenn Eugen Ellingsen, Michael Leung and Anthony Ko) harvested the fruits of their one-year residency with The HK FARMers’ Almanac, a publishing project that documents a year’s worth of activity and research edited by Elaine W. Ho. Inspired by both the ancient Tung Shing divination guide and The Old Farmers’ Almanac published in North America since 1792, The HK FARMers’ Almanac was created in a three-day book sprint process with Farms for Democracy (Rishi Kukreja & Emily Wong), Sangwoodgoon (Natalie Lo), Very MK (Holok Chen), Yaumatei Gardener (Kiki Ho & Dorothy Cheung), Bishan Commune (Kunfang Zhao), artist-researcher Elaine W. Ho, writer-researcher Ming Lin, journalists Kit Chan and Christopher DeWolf, graphic designer Laine Tam and Spring Workshop’s Mandy Chan and Mimi Brown. Come and explore the physical collection of ‘zines, objects and visual/sound pieces, all housed in a handmade planter box.
