As we enter the tail end of Spring’s fall program Des hôtes: a foreigner, a human, an unexpected visitor, we continue to chart the blurred politics of hospitality by bringing you a final series of on-going events in November. Centered around the metaphor of animals, these events reveals how we receive and relate to one another as human beings.

Join us as Trevor Yeung shares the developments of his on-going project Lonesome and George (Nov 7). Inspired by the story of Lonesome George, the last known specimen of a subspecies of Pinta Island tortoise, his new project invites other Lonesome Georges in the wild to send him their stories which form the body of the evening.

Milena Bonilla and Luisa Ungar will host This Rabbit Looks To The Left: Chocolate Scrying (Nov 21 and 22) when the artists invite audience members to join them for a performative gathering over a cup of hot chocolate. This will be followed by a performative lecture Clapping Backwards (Nov 27 and 28) where Luisa Ungar will enlist an expert to present research on public space and animality in a performative lecture. The evidence left from the sessions can be traced within the Des hôtes exhibition.

Come to Spring this month to experience the nuanced relationship between “host” and “guest.”

The fall program at Spring draws attention to the roles of host and guest. Over the course of three months, the exhibition has gradually taken shape through an ongoing event program, artist-devised tours, chocolate readings, post-hypnosis sessions and zoological lectures, where artworks function as prompts for—or evidence of—these gatherings. Traversing the various circumstances where the host-guest status quo is stretched and ruptured, Des hôtes creates a web of relations that magnifies the realities of how we receive and relate to one another.

This Rabbit Looks To The Left:
Chocolate Scrying

with Milena Bonilla and Luisa Ungar

For this performative gathering, Milena Bonilla and Luisa Ungar invite guests to drink chocolate and take part in a public scrying. The hot chocolate leaves the stains necessary for images to turn into visions and conversations. The inapprehensible character of the liquid plays on fears, affections and expectations, while delving into the past and future, if the cacao allows it.

Clapping Backwards
with Luisa Ungar and expert-guest

Luisa Ungar and her invited guest will present their research on relationships between public space and animality. It follows from the studies called Spontaneous innovation for future deception (SIFFD) developed in various zoos around the world since the 1940s. On this occasion, the invited animal behavior specialist will focus on the way in which certain local wild species have adapted themselves to staged environments.
