goes to
Spring Workshop!

Happy 2016!  We hope the year has started well for you, and that Hong Kong’s lowest temperatures in over a half-century are bringing you wintry delight.

We are thrilled to announce that Spring Workshop won Best Asian Contemporary Art Institution at the Prudential Eye Awards in Singapore. The award was decided by public vote and you are our public, so we have YOU to thank for this award! We hope to continue to earn your support.

The first of our adventures together in 2016 will be the world premiere of Duilian, a newly-commissioned film by Wu Tsang that will be shown as a film installation at Spring from March through May. Tsang conceived the project ten years ago, and found focused time to carry out additional research, scriptwriting, rehearsing and filming during her past six months in residence in Hong Kong at Spring Workshop. Those of you who attended Tsang’s exuberant public program Mutual Love Society–when attendees were invited to join her to “mis-translate” the writings of Qiu Jin and Wu Zhiying while quaffing wine–must come back to see what came of it all.

You may have noticed that the Wong Chuk Hang MTR looks about ready to open, and we are getting ready ourselves with a new updated map of the neighborhood by this year’s competition winner/artist Lokz Phoenix. We’ll hand you a copy when you come over.

Stay warm.

Duilian Opening
Wu Tsang

Spring Workshop presents the world premiere of Duilian, a film installation that is the culmination of a decade-long research project by visual artist and filmmaker Wu Tsang. The multi-media exhibition centers around Duilian, a newly-commissioned film loosely based on the life of Qiu Jin (秋瑾 1875–1907), a turn-of-the-century Chinese revolutionary poet, and her calligrapher friend Wu Zhiying (吳芝瑛, 1867-1936).

Duilian was produced and filmed during Wu Tsang’s two three-month residencies at Spring Workshop in 2015.

New map of Wong Chuk Hang
from local artist Lokz Phoenix

Every year Spring publishes an artist’s hand-made map of Wong Chuk Hang that is meant to guide visitors around the neighbourhood, while chronicling the evolution of this place with updated lists of the local galleries and restaurants.

This year’s winner of the Map Competition is Lokz Phoenix! The 2nd and 3rd prizes are awarded to Charlene Man and Blessy Man. Thank you to everyone who participated in the competition for your exquisite entries.

Phoenix’s winning Wong Chuk Hang Map can be found in print on the flip side of our latest Spring Workshop program brochure. You can also download a digital file here.
