(From 5 texts on The Social Contract:)

“The audience gets to choose whether to participate in what may lead to a form of freedom through an agreement based on constraint.” – Betti-Sue Hertz

“A group that refuses to speak of itself, to acknowledge any commonality, seems to be an impossibility.” – Mia Jankowicz

“[Contracts] are a mechanism that we have become accustomed to, and this is why they can exist unnoticed.” – Alana Kushnir

The Social Contract invites the audience to sign a legally-binding Participation and Confidentiality Agreement in order to enter the exhibition space. In doing so, the viewer becomes part of a temporary community of silent participants for a set period of days, agreeing not to disclose what they have seen.  Presented by Spring and Witte De With.

Talk: The Fragments that Resist the Story
Aslı Çavuşoğlu

Please join us and Spring’s artist-in-residence Aslı Çavuşoğlu for a talk entitled “The Fragments that Resist the Story” on Thursday, December 12, 2013 at 12pm at Asia Art Archive’s A Space.

Aslı Çavuşoğlu (b. 1982, Istanbul) examines the way in which cultural and historical facts are transformed, represented, and interpreted by individuals. Working across various media, Çavuşoğlu assumes the role of an interpreter, writer or facilitator in her projects in order to highlight the precarious and subjective nature of our shared histories, questioning those who frame these experiences. She will discuss the use of backward construction in her practice by chronicling the history of a murder, of art, or of a nation through some of her recent works, including 191/205 (2009), a seven-minute sound work inspired by the 1985 governmental censorship on public broadcast in Turkey; In Diverse Estimations Little Moscow (2011), a film that examines the idea of collective memories through the study of a military incident; and The Stone Speaks (2013), an installation that explores the potential of archaeological artifacts deemed inept by authorities to form narrative.
