“My farming story began long ago, before I was born. In 1908, my grandfather (高瑞熊) was born in Zhongshan (中山), Guangdong (廣東) China. He married my grandmother (蔡煜群) in 1942, and in 1947, 1948 and 1951, my uncle ( 高鑑墀), father (高鑑榮) and auntie (高浣蓮) were born.” —Anthony Ko, HK Farm
Growing living things from the soil is an activity that transcends generation, location, class and profession. It is not only about the final harvest, but as much about the stories that unfold across the years, and the wisdom gained and passed on in community.
As summer creeps into autumn, urban agriculturists and artist collective HK Farm (Glenn Eugen Ellingsen, Michael Leung and Anthony Ko) will harvest the fruits of their one year residency with The HK FARMers’ Almanac, a publishing project that will document a year’s worth of activity and research. Inspired by both the ancient Tung Shing divination guide and The Old Farmers’ Almanac published in North America since 1792, The HK FARMers’ Almanac will be created in a three-day book sprint process when collaborators will meet to write, discuss, edit, and refine the content which will then be published as a collection of ‘zines, objects and visual/sound pieces, all housed in a handmade planter box.
The project has been sown and tended by: HK Farm (Glenn Eugen Ellingsen, Michael Leung and Anthony Ko), Farms for Democracy (Rishi Kukreja & Emily Wong), Sangwoodgoon (Natalie Lo), Very MK (Holok Chen), Yaumatei Gardener (Kiki Ho & Dorothy Cheung), Bishan Commune (Kunfang Zhao), artist-researcher Elaine W. Ho, writer-researcher Ming Lin, journalists Kit Chan and Christopher DeWolf, graphic designer Laine Tam and Spring Workshop’s Mandy Chan and Mimi Brown.
Join us this Wednesday, Thursday or Friday for happy hour or come over on Sunday to publish with us. |
