“My farming story began long ago, before I was born. In 1908, my grandfather (高瑞熊) was born in Zhongshan (中山), Guangdong (廣東) China. He married my grandmother (蔡煜群) in 1942, and in 1947, 1948 and 1951, my uncle ( 高鑑墀), father (高鑑榮) and auntie (高浣蓮) were born.” —Anthony Ko, HK Farm

Growing living things from the soil is an activity that transcends generation, location, class and profession. It is not only about the final harvest, but as much about the stories that unfold across the years, and the wisdom gained and passed on in community.

As summer creeps into autumn, urban agriculturists and artist collective HK Farm (Glenn Eugen Ellingsen, Michael Leung and Anthony Ko) will harvest the fruits of their one year residency with The HK FARMers’ Almanac, a publishing project that will document a year’s worth of activity and research. Inspired by both the ancient Tung Shing divination guide and The Old Farmers’ Almanac published in North America since 1792, The HK FARMers’ Almanac will be created in a three-day book sprint process when collaborators will meet to write, discuss, edit, and refine the content which will then be published as a collection of ‘zines, objects and visual/sound pieces, all housed in a handmade planter box.

The project has been sown and tended by: HK Farm (Glenn Eugen Ellingsen, Michael Leung and Anthony Ko), Farms for Democracy (Rishi Kukreja & Emily Wong), Sangwoodgoon (Natalie Lo), Very MK (Holok Chen), Yaumatei Gardener (Kiki Ho & Dorothy Cheung), Bishan Commune (Kunfang Zhao), artist-researcher Elaine W. Ho, writer-researcher Ming Lin, journalists Kit Chan and Christopher DeWolf, graphic designer Laine Tam and Spring Workshop’s Mandy Chan and Mimi Brown.

Join us this Wednesday, Thursday or Friday for happy hour or come over on Sunday to publish with us.

The HK FARMers’ Almanac
DIY Launch

Join us on the afternoon of Sunday, Aug 23 for a DIY Launch of The HK FARMers’ Almanac when you can try your hand at binding a ‘zine and admire the output of stitching and silkscreening stations.

An extensive work station conceived by artist and Almanac editor Elaine W. Ho will transform Spring’s main space into a performative production line, where words, images, sound and compost pile up for an in-situ exercise of thinking through the meaning behind urban farming practices. Invited contributors will discuss, illustrate, edit and bind content for this limited edition planter-publication.

You come to Spring to visit the farm and spy the Talk to your plants booth.  You go in to take a plant selfie, but then you see the microphone, and you realize you have never actually spoken to a plant!

It’s now or never.

So you find a tender little plant to hold and you hit RECORD on the tape machine….
