April Program

A small public program for Days push off into nights will be led by artist Ho Sin Tung.  Haunted by the fragments of “him” in the Oxford Dictionary and fascinated by lexicography, she decided to collect all the sentence examples with the subject “he” in the dictionary and develop her findings into fiction. After spending two years reading less than one-tenth of the dictionary, and informing herself on related subjects such as lexicography, collecting and preservation, Ho has begun to reflect on the tale of James Murray (1837 –1915), the chief editor of the Oxford English Dictionary, who thought editing the OED would only require a few years, but ended up working on it for 70 years and died without finishing it. Caught in a web of words, Ho has now become, in her words, “a frustrated office lady trapped in endless paperwork and uncertainty about her project.”

In an effort to break out of this trap, Ho Sin Tung invites you to join her and her invited guests for intimate consultation sessions to
discuss the bittersweet nature of solitary endeavour.  Sign up information below.

Other things not to miss this month: a lecture/reading project by artist Job Koelewijn at SCM and a screening of Chantal Akerman’s “News from Home” (1977) at Spring as the finissage for our exhibition Days push off into nights on April 26.

Public Program:
Consultation Sessions with
Ho Sin Tung

“Relatively young, frustrated office lady, buried under paperwork, trying to understand the world through the OED, seeks professional help.  Looking for kind, experienced organisers and linguisticians for companionship and stimulating conversations. Meet me on 18, 25, 26 April.  Email me at intotheworb@gmail.com.”

As part of the public program for Days push off into nights, artist Ho Sin Tung will hold three intimate consultation sessions where Ho and Christina Li invite Michelle Wong (Sat, April 18, in English), Lee Chi-Leung (Sat, April 25, in Cantonese) and Wong Wai Yin (Sun, April 26, in Cantonese) to discuss the bittersweet and solitary moments of research, writing and representation.

All sessions will start at 3:30 pm. Spaces are extremely limited, so please sign up at intotheworb@gmail.com.

On Sunday, April 26, the last day of the exhibition, Ho’s session will be followed by a screening of the film “News from Home” by Chantal Akerman.  More information on the screening below.

Finissage for Days push off into nights:
Screening of Chantal Akerman’s
“News from Home”

On Sunday, April 26, directly following the last consultation session with Ho Sin Tung, we’ll celebrate the last day of the show with a screening of Chantal Akerman’s “News from Home” (1977).

Set in New York City in the 1970s, the film is an intimate document by Belgian filmmaker Chantal Akerman about her move to the city. Akerman’s narration of letters she received from her mother in Brussels accompanies drifting shots, everyday street scenes and people in transit, passing time between connections. Filmed together with cinematographer Babette Mangolte, her investigation of the city offers viewers the poignant and absorbing experience of watching a newcomer begin to find her bearings in a foreign place.

These are the last few days of our exhibition Days push off into nights, which features artists Olga Chernysheva, Moyra Davey,
Elmgreen & Dragset, Cevdet Erek, Lee Kit, Job Koelewijn,
Jewyo Rhii
and Magdalen Wong. Curated by incoming Spring director Christina Li, the show explores how we find meaning within stationary moments and pockets of slowness.
