Continuing the Atlas of Asia Art Archive, an atlas installation of real and imaginary places found in Asia Art Archive which was developed during their AAA residency, artist/architect duo MAP Office will present “Performing the Archipelago.”  “Performing the Archipelago” is a series of events that explore the possibility of cultural exchange and dialogue between a selection of artists included in the Atlas. The first of the programme is two-day event takes place at Spring Workshop with 7 artists from the region, including Ho Tzu Nyen (Singapore), Lam Tung Pang (Hong Kong), Lee Kit (Hong Kong), Li Yifan (Chongqing), Joao Vasco Paiva (Hong Kong), Jewyo Rhii (Seoul), and Yuk King Tan (Hong Kong).

Part 1 – UNIVERSAL VALUES

Atlas of AAA by Valerie Portefaix (MAP Office)

8.30-10.30 pm
Screening of the documentary Village Archive: Longwancun 2006 Video Files (2008, 91 mins) followed by a discussion with artist/director Li Yifan (Chongqing).

The film flows with the changing of the seasons, following no specific storyline. There are no great joys, no great tragedies. Everything happens, yet nothing comes to conclusion; time simply passes. Strictly speaking, this is an edited visual archive of the countryside, a day-to-day account of an ordinary southwestern village of no particular importance.

Part 2 – ECONOMIC ONES

Yuk King Tan (Hong Kong) in conversation with Laurent Gutierrez (MAP Office, Hong Kong).

This discussion will be based on Tan’s Island Portrait, a group portrait of the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation living in Rarotonga, capital of the Cook Islands situated in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. These 61 Chinese workers from one of the world’s largest construction companies are currently building Rarotonga’s courthouse.

Presentation by Joao Vasco Paiva (Hong Kong).

Paiva will present a slideshow of a personal narrative with maps and images, which serve as an alternative visualisation and interpretation of the history from and about Asia.

Part 4 – PERSONAL KINGDOM

Presentation by Jewyo Rhii (Seoul)

Jewyo Rhii will present her work for the first time in Hong Kong. Focusing on Lie on Han River, a three-part installation composed of drawings developed over three years, a video related to the drawings, and temporary objects, the work assumes the form of a love letter to an ex-lover. It tells the story of two anti-capitalist artists who met and dated around the Han River in Seoul but separated when winter came.

Part 5 – NOMADIC ONES

Lee Kit will present a new video related to his work How to set up an apartment for Johnny.

The artist will read a series of texts based on the references to traditional Chinese culture in his recent paintings.
