Galleries should be more like nightclub bathrooms

A bathroom is, amongst other things, a space of equality. Regardless of age, sex, culture, background or status, once within, we are all reduced to strangers.

If happens all the time. On a night out at your favourite club, you find yourself talking to a stranger in the bathroom while re-applying lipstick or washing your hands. It happens all the time, as equals. Using the bathroom both as a stage and a metaphor, unanimity and inclusivity become central ideas.

By recreating your favourite nightclub’s bathroom and presenting it as a microcosm of all bathrooms, or at least the fun ones, the interactive experience becomes about inclusivity — a feeling all too rare in the art scene. Art-Users are left to question whether or not the walls define the space as a gallery.

ABOUT THIS IS NOT A GALLERY

Lorenza Brancadoro is a Hong Kong-based artist working primarily in photography. Born in Naples, Italy, in 1991, Lorenza moved to Hong Kong in 2010, where she completed Bachelor degrees in Advertising and Photography at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). Exploring portraiture of varying forms, Lorenza’s work investigates the liminal space between identity and intimacy. Most often done on film, these explorations into identity, are often reflective undertakings into the artist’s own understanding of self. Lorenza’s work has been hung in several group shows across Hong Kong. Her first solo show, Dehumanized showed in 2016. For more information, visit www.lorenzabrancadoro.com.
